INEC recognises Major Agbo as NNPP National Chairman, ending another chapter in the party’s long-running leadership dispute.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognised Major Agbo as the NNPP National Chairman, marking a new chapter in the party’s leadership dispute.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised Major Agbo as the NNPP National Chairman, replacing factional chairman Bala Yusuf. The announcement came during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, while an independent check confirmed that Agbo’s name now appears on the electoral commission’s official portal as the party’s national chairman.
INEC also updated its records to include members of the party’s National Working Committee, including National Secretary Olaposi Oginni, National Treasurer Prince Adetoyese Omokanye, National Financial Secretary Anthony Apugo, and National Legal Adviser Asuquo Ibok.
The decision represents a major development in the leadership crisis that has affected the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) since the 2023 general election, with rival groups claiming control of the party.
Speaking to journalists, Agbo described the update on INEC’s portal as confirmation of his leadership. He said, “I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC.”
He added that the recognition had strengthened the party’s preparations for future political activities and stated, “Indeed, the era of betrayal of trust is over as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have since gone their ways. We wish them all the best in their future political endeavours.”
Agbo also said the party had started preparations for the 2027 general elections after receiving access to upload candidates in line with INEC’s timetable. He pledged to present credible candidates committed to good governance and national development. In addition, he urged the Federal Government and security agencies to improve cooperation against insecurity and called on INEC to remain impartial in delivering free, fair and transparent elections in 2027.
Reacting to the development, Bala Yusuf confirmed that he was aware of INEC’s decision but said he would comment fully after returning to Abuja. He stated, “Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details. Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja. I will release a statement.”
