Florida Renames Airport After Donald Trump

A Donald Trump airport has officially opened in Florida after state authorities approved renaming Palm Beach International Airport in the president’s honour.

A Florida airport has been renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, marking another step in efforts by President Donald Trump and his supporters to place his name on public landmarks and government institutions. The change took effect on Thursday after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the measure into law.

The airport, formerly known as Palm Beach International Airport, has carried its previous name for nearly 50 years. Eric Trump marked the occasion by landing the family’s private Boeing 757, known as “Trump Force One,” at the newly renamed airport, located a short distance from the Trump family’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

Speaking to Fox News, Eric Trump described the occasion as “A beautiful day.” He added, “I don’t think there’s anybody more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump and maybe all of Florida.” He also noted that the main road leading from the airport is already named “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard” and said travellers would now see the airport code linked to the Donald Trump airport name on their tickets.

Reaction among travellers was divided. Corporate pilot Chris Bailey supported the decision, saying Trump had “certainly done enough to warrant a name of an airport.” However, doctor John Manov disagreed, stating, “Palm Beach is a better brand. People don’t really like Donald Trump. It seems in poor taste.”

The airport renaming forms part of a broader effort to expand Donald Trump’s name and image across public institutions. Officials were also expected to unveil the Donald J. Trump Bridge in Tennessee, while other government buildings and programmes have already adopted his name. According to the US Treasury, Trump’s signature is also expected to appear on US dollar notes later this year.

Critics have argued that the growing use of Trump’s name on public assets resembles personality cults associated with authoritarian governments. Eric Trump rejected that criticism, saying, “anything that bears our name is slightly controversial.” He added that the president felt “honored” and “humbled” by the airport renaming.
