Tinubu Hails Remodeled Abuja City Gate as Symbol of Unity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the newly remodelled Abuja City Gate as a lasting symbol of national renewal, unity and progress.

Represented by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at Thursday’s commissioning ceremony, the President praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for transforming Nigeria’s capital through sustained infrastructure development. He said the project marked a fitting tribute to both his administration’s third anniversary and the FCT’s 50th anniversary.

“It gives me great pleasure to join you this evening for the commissioning of the remodeled Abuja City Gate,” the President said, calling it “particularly significant” given the dual milestones. He described the monument as one of Nigeria’s most recognisable landmarks, adding that Abuja stands as the “heart of the Nigerian federation” where all 36 states converge.

The Abuja City Gate now features a striking water fountain representing the 36 states and the FCT. Tinubu said the gateway “tells every visitor and Nigerians arriving from the airport that they have entered a city built on unity, diversity and shared aspirations.” He commended Wike’s “relentless dedication” to transforming the capital, noting ongoing road construction and public space improvements across the city.

Wike revealed that the remodelling project began after the First Lady insisted the capital’s entrance should reflect the nation’s stature. He recalled how heavy overnight rain nearly disrupted the ceremony, saying, “Whatever they do, we must commission this city gate today.” He also described the complex underground engineering work involved, noting that Julius Berger handled the redesign despite tight deadlines.

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, called the landmark “a new era of infrastructural renewal, urban rebirth and national pride.” She praised both Tinubu’s vision and Wike’s execution, noting the project restores Abuja’s original master plan. President Tinubu urged residents to protect the facility, stressing that public infrastructure “belongs to all of us.”
