President Bola Tinubu has chosen Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over possible changes to his political team.
Tinubu officially submitted Shettima’s name alongside his nomination details to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee ahead of the election. The decision confirms that Kashim Shettima will remain the President’s choice for vice president if the ticket contests the 2027 poll.
Before the announcement, there were widespread reports that political considerations could lead Tinubu to replace his current deputy. Some APC stakeholders, especially from the North-East, had not openly supported Shettima’s return, creating uncertainty around his future.
Some political groups also suggested that the President might select a northern Christian as his vice-presidential candidate. However, the latest development has ended those discussions, with Tinubu and Shettima’s ticket now set for the upcoming election.
Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, confirmed the move in a post on X. He wrote: “About now, at the Continental Hotel, Abuja, President Tinubu submits INEC nomination form to the APC NWC as Sole Presidential Candidate for the 2027 Elections.
“President Bola Ahmad Tinubu has equally tapped Kashim Shettima, the current Vice President, Senator, as his running mate for vice president in the 2027 election.”
The announcement places Kashim Shettima at the centre of Tinubu’s 2027 political campaign strategy. The 2027 presidential election is expected to attract strong interest as political parties prepare for another major national contest.
