Seyi Makinde has welcomed the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers from Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing it as a major relief.

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, expressed happiness after schoolchildren and teachers who were kidnapped from the area regained their freedom following more than 50 days in captivity. He thanked President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for their efforts in securing the victims’ release.

Speaking during a phone interview with Channels Television on Friday evening, Makinde said he felt overjoyed by the safe return of the victims. He added that he would provide more details after gathering his thoughts.

“We will use this opportunity to thank our service commanders, the Nigerian police, DSS, the military, and of course, the president (Tinubu) for pushing really hard to have this done.

“I am right now overjoyed. I will talk later when I can put my thoughts together,” he said.

The Orire school rescue follows earlier reports that kidnapped pupils and teachers from the Oyo community had been freed after spending over 50 days with their abductors. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu, confirmed the development through a post on his 𝕏 handle.

Onanuga stated that the victims were rescued by security forces. His post read: “Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been freed by their abductors. The kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by Security Forces.

“One of the rescued teachers in Oyo sends a thank you message to President Tinubu and the security agencies.”

The Orire school rescue has brought relief to families and communities affected by the incident. The Orire school rescue also highlights the role of cooperation between government officials and security agencies in responding to security challenges.

How can authorities build on this success to improve safety in schools across Oyo State?
