US Senator Lindsey Graham has died at 71, prompting tributes from political leaders in the United States and Israel.
Lindsey Graham, a senior US senator and close ally of President Donald Trump, has died aged 71 after a brief and sudden illness. His office confirmed the news in a statement posted on his official X account, saying he passed away on the evening of Saturday, 11 July.
The statement added: “Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”
Lindsey Graham began his career in Congress after winning election to the US House of Representatives in 1994. He later secured a seat in the US Senate in 2002 and went on to win re-election in 2008, 2014 and 2020. Most recently, Lindsey Graham served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
Tributes have continued to arrive following the announcement. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster described Lindsey Graham as “irreplaceable” in a post on X. He praised him as “The fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America — and a loyal and steadfast friend.”
Throughout his political career, Lindsey Graham gained recognition for his firm backing of Israel and his strong stance on Iran. His views on foreign policy made him one of the best-known Republican voices on international affairs.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also paid tribute, saying he was “shocked and heartbroken” by the news. He described the late senator as “Senator Graham was a beacon of moral clarity and a true leader of the U.S.-Israel partnership.” Herzog added, “We will never forget how he stood by the people of Israel in our most difficult moments, and we will remain eternally grateful for his sense of justice, truth and loyalty.” He concluded, “The people of Israel mourn his loss, and I will miss my great friend very dearly.”
