NiMet Warns 26 States Over Flash Flood Risk
NiMet warns 26 states and the FCT of increased flash flood risk as persistent rainfall continues across Nigeria.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh flash flood warning for 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The agency said persistent rainfall has increased the risk of flooding across many parts of the country between 11 and 20 July 2026.
According to NiMet, northern states facing a high flash flood warning include Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi. The agency explained that continuous rainfall has left the soil fully saturated, making it unable to absorb more water. As a result, the flash flood warning remains in place for communities that could experience heavy surface runoff.
The alert appeared in NiMet’s Probable Flash Flood Risk Map for the Second Dekad, July 11–20, 2026, which was released to reporters on Sunday. The report also identified Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and the FCT as areas vulnerable to flooding during the period.
NiMet said the combination of ongoing rainfall and waterlogged ground is likely to trigger widespread flooding in several locations. The agency expressed particular concern for low-lying communities, urban centres, and places with poor drainage systems, where floodwaters can build up quickly. Residents in affected areas are expected to remain alert as the flash flood warning continues throughout the forecast period.
