Abba Yusuf Picks Murtala Garo as Running Mate

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has named Murtala Garo as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election, reaffirming his confidence in the deputy governor ahead of the next electoral contest.

The announcement appeared in a statement issued on Monday in Kano by Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House. Governor Abba Yusuf made the declaration during a strategic meeting with federal political appointees of President Bola Tinubu at the Kano Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

According to the governor, the decision to retain Murtala Garo as his running mate was based on his loyalty, competence and commitment to the development of Kano State since taking office as deputy governor. He described Garo as a dependable partner who has consistently shown a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism throughout the administration.

Governor Abba Yusuf also passed a vote of confidence in his deputy, saying Garo’s contributions have strengthened the government’s efforts to deliver meaningful development and improve the welfare of people across the state. He praised their working relationship and expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved so far.

The governor urged party leaders, political appointees and supporters to remain united as the administration builds on its achievements ahead of the 2027 governorship election. He called for continued commitment and cooperation as preparations gather pace for the next electoral cycle.

Abba Yusuf was elected governor under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in 2023 but later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this year. He is expected to seek re-election on the platform of the ruling party, with Murtala Garo remaining his running mate.
