International Alert Nigeria Tackles Niger Delta Poverty Challenge

International Alert Nigeria visits oil-affected communities in Akwa Ibom, working with partners to understand challenges and encourage inclusive development.

International Alert Nigeria (IAN) has stepped up efforts to support communities affected by oil and gas activities in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. The organisation is working to improve dialogue, assess local needs, and promote sustainable development.

The non-governmental organisation expressed concern over the difficult living conditions faced by seaside communities impacted by oil exploration. In response, it partnered with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to carry out community visits and stakeholder meetings across affected areas in Akwa Ibom State.

The engagements took place in Eastern Obolo and nearby communities, involving private sector representatives, traditional leaders, and community members. The visits helped stakeholders understand local realities and identify key areas requiring support.

During a meeting with Sterling Group/Sumeda Energy, discussions focused on how businesses can contribute to community growth. Company representatives highlighted their efforts in providing employment opportunities and supporting social programmes in healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

The delegation also met traditional rulers and community leaders to discuss peacebuilding, local challenges, and the need for stronger government involvement. Residents raised concerns about poor infrastructure, limited access to essential services, and the importance of including communities in development decisions.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs stressed the importance of visiting communities directly to create effective policies. “There is a difference when you come to see things for yourself. It provides clearer insight and ensures that our interventions are aligned with the real needs of the people,” the Minister stated.

International Alert Nigeria Country Director, Dr Kingsley Udo, also highlighted the importance of cooperation. He said, “partnerships between government, communities, and the private sector are essential to delivering inclusive and impactful interventions.”

Through these efforts, International Alert Nigeria continues to promote community resilience, stronger partnerships, and inclusive solutions for Niger Delta communities.
