TCN Expands Grid to Boost Rail and Power

TCN partners with the Transport Ministry to strengthen railway electricity supply while expanding transmission capacity in Katsina through new infrastructure investments nationwide.

Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has strengthened efforts to improve Nigeria’s power transmission network by partnering with the Federal Ministry of Transportation to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway facilities to the national grid.

The partnership followed a stakeholders’ meeting at TCN’s Kano Regional Headquarters, where participants discussed plans to provide a stable and reliable electricity supply for railway operations. The proposed national grid connection is expected to improve the efficiency of rail services and support the Federal Government’s infrastructure development goals.

The General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engineer M.K. Bello, stressed the importance of continuous cooperation among all parties. He said early technical engagement would help ensure smooth project delivery and provide dependable electricity to the railway facilities.

Stakeholders reviewed technical requirements, project timelines, operational coordination, system reliability and the responsibilities of each organisation. They also discussed compliance with grid standards, network safety and the smooth integration of the railway facilities into the national grid connection. All participants reaffirmed their commitment to completing the project successfully.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has received two new 100MVA power transformers for installation at the ongoing 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Katsina. The equipment forms part of the company’s wider power transmission expansion programme.

According to TCN, the transformers will increase the region’s transmission capacity by an additional 160MW after installation, testing and commissioning. The project will improve grid reliability, flexibility and efficiency while enabling more bulk electricity to reach Distribution Companies serving Katsina State and nearby communities.

The company added that the Katsina substation is one of several nationwide projects aimed at expanding, modernising and reinforcing Nigeria’s transmission network to meet rising electricity demand.
