APGA Explains Withdrawal From 2027 Presidential Race, Backs Tinubu Re-election
APGA says its decision to skip the presidential race supports President Tinubu while strengthening its push for legislative seats nationwide.
APGA has explained why it did not submit a presidential candidate for the 2027 election through the INEC nomination portal. The party said the decision was deliberate and reflected its political strategy rather than any failure to meet electoral requirements.
According to APGA National Publicity Secretary Mazi Ejimofor Opara, the party’s National Executive Committee reached the decision after broad consultations. He said members agreed to support President Bola Tinubu in his bid for a second term because they believe it serves the national interest. Opara stated, “We have not uploaded a presidential candidate because the National Executive Committee of the party has already taken a decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.”
He also confirmed that APGA completed the nomination process for all its candidates seeking seats in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. Opara added, “However, I can confirm that APGA has successfully uploaded all its candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly elections to the INEC portal.” He said the party submitted every required document within the deadline set by INEC.
Opara stressed that backing President Bola Tinubu does not mean APGA has stepped away from the 2027 election. Instead, the party plans to compete strongly in legislative contests across Nigeria. It aims to increase its presence in the Senate, House of Representatives, and state assemblies while protecting its identity and advancing its political agenda.
He added that stronger legislative representation remains central to the party’s goals of serving supporters, promoting national development, and deepening Nigeria’s democracy. Opara also urged members and supporters to unite behind APGA candidates and support President Bola Tinubu in line with the National Executive Committee’s decision. He maintained that the absence of a presidential nominee on the INEC portal simply reflects the party’s chosen approach for the 2027 election, not any problem with the nomination process.
