Senate Approves ₦50m Support for Oyo Abduction Victims
Senate approves financial support for families of teachers and security personnel killed during Oyo rescue operation.
The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation for families of those killed during the Oyo abduction incident involving pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the decision during Wednesday’s plenary, describing the deaths as a painful sacrifice in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insecurity. He said the donation would recognise the bravery and commitment of those who lost their lives during the tragic event.
Akpabio explained that each of the families of the two murdered teachers and three security personnel would receive ₦10 million. He said the financial support was intended to assist the bereaved families and honour the sacrifices made by the victims.
The Senate President also praised the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for successfully rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after more than 50 days in captivity. The victims were freed after spending 56 days in the hands of their abductors.
The Oyo abduction incident also led the Senate to identify the security personnel who died during the rescue operation. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele named the fallen officers as Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.
Bamidele added that Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain of the 81 Battalion suffered injuries during the rescue mission.
The Oyo abduction incident has renewed attention on the risks faced by security personnel and communities affected by violent attacks. The Senate said the donation represents a gesture of support for families who suffered losses during the operation.
