Popular television host Rufai Oseni became emotional while discussing Nigeria’s economic challenges during the Arise TV Morning Show on Friday.

Oseni questioned how Nigeria’s economy moved from a position of financial strength to becoming heavily dependent on borrowing. He reflected on the country’s past ability to support global financial institutions, comparing it with the current concerns over rising public debt.

Speaking on the programme, Oseni said, “I cried for Nigeria this morning. Let me read something to you and show why I sometimes raise my voice about this country.

“On December 24, 1974, Nigeria signed a long-term borrowing agreement with the World Bank. Under that agreement, Nigeria provided $240 million in net resources to the World Bank Reserve.

“We were lending money to the World Bank to support development in other countries. We also lent $120 million to the International Monetary Fund, IMF. What happened to this country?”

The presenter highlighted the contrast between Nigeria’s historical financial position and the country’s current economic difficulties. His comments came amid growing public discussion about the Federal Government’s continued borrowing and the increase in Nigeria’s debt profile.

The concerns surrounding Nigeria’s economy have continued to attract attention as citizens and analysts debate the impact of government borrowing, financial management and long-term economic planning.

Oseni’s remarks have added to wider conversations about the need for stronger economic strategies that can improve growth, reduce dependency on loans and restore confidence in the country’s financial future.
