Zenith Bank Engages Diasporans, Eyes Canadian Market

Zenith Bank has concluded plans for a nationwide customer engagement campaign across seven Canadian cities in preparation to broaden its presence in the North American market.

The bank’s latest outreach, branded “Canada, Are You Ready?”, will see Zenith host events in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto (Mississauga), Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver (Surrey), and Winnipeg throughout August 2026. At these events, prospective and existing customers will have access to free Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolment, National Identification Number (NIN) registration, seamless account opening, account reactivation, and digital banking onboarding.

This engagement strategy, already used in other countries where Zenith has opened offices, signals the bank’s intention to establish operations in Canada. The initiative aims to build relationships with the Nigerian diaspora and lay the groundwork for a potential market entry.

In addition to core retail banking services, Zenith will offer mortgage products at concessionary rates, reflecting a broader plan to cater to the financial needs of Nigerians living abroad.

The roadshow will kick off in Edmonton on August 3 and wrap up in Winnipeg on August 29, with daily customer engagement sessions running from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Group Managing Director Adaora Umeoji hinted at the bank’s expansion programme during its last annual general meeting: “Over the years, our global expansion strategy has focused on following our customers’ businesses into markets with strong cultural alignment and significant growth potential. Today, we have subsidiaries in the UK, France, Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the UAE, and a representative office in China. Our expansion strategy is very deliberate—we continue to follow our customers’ businesses into countries where we can scale, adapt culturally, and make profits.”

Industry observers see the programme as part of Zenith Bank’s international expansion strategy, leveraging its diaspora banking proposition to strengthen customer acquisition in key overseas markets. The move comes as Nigerian banks pursue growth opportunities beyond Africa, targeting jurisdictions with significant Nigerian communities.

While Zenith Bank has yet to announce a formal launch date for full banking operations in Canada, the engagement campaign strongly suggests the lender is positioning itself to support customers in the country as it advances its international growth ambitions.
