Lagos Pays N3.1bn Compensation to Property Owners
t: Lagos State has paid N3.1 billion to property owners affected by land acquisitions for major infrastructure projects across the state.
The Lagos State Government has paid N3.1 billion in compensation to 331 property owners whose lands and buildings were acquired for major public infrastructure projects. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the payments on Monday, saying the beneficiaries are from Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Igbogbo and Ogba.
The property compensation forms part of the state’s effort to ensure that residents affected by compulsory land acquisition receive fair treatment. According to the governor, the government remains committed to balancing infrastructure development with the rights of property owners.
“Today, I presented N3.1 billion in compensation to 331 property owners whose land and buildings were acquired for key infrastructure projects across Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Igbogbo and Ogba,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.
He explained that every compensation claim went through a verification process before payment received approval. The governor added that the administration understands the impact of land acquisition on families, businesses and communities.
“As we build the roads and public infrastructure Lagos needs, we must also do right by the people whose lives are directly affected,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the projects will improve transportation and public services for millions of residents, but stressed that development should not come at the expense of fairness. He added, “Behind every property is a family, a home or a business. While these projects will benefit millions of Lagosians, I do not take the sacrifice of those who made them possible for granted. We made a promise to govern with fairness and accountability. Today was another opportunity to keep that promise.”
The property compensation exercise reflects the government’s commitment to accountability and equitable governance. Under Nigerian law, authorities must compensate owners when land or property is acquired for public purposes.
