Anthony Taylor Retires After 20-Year Refereeing Career

Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from refereeing after a distinguished 20-year career, saying the pressure and constant attention faced by officials influenced his decision.

The Premier League referee confirmed his departure on Tuesday after taking charge of 831 matches, including 432 Premier League games. His final match came during the World Cup, where he officiated Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal earlier in July.

Taylor joined the Premier League officials’ list in 2010 and went on to referee at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups as well as the 2020 and 2024 European Championships. His calm handling of the Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland earned praise after the game was stopped when Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.

The Anthony Taylor retirement announcement also follows a career that included difficult moments. In 2023, former Roma manager Jose Mourinho criticised Taylor after Roma’s Europa League final defeat to Sevilla, calling him a “disgrace” during a post-match news conference. Mourinho later confronted the referee in a car park, and Taylor and his family faced abuse from Roma supporters at Budapest Airport.

“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant,” Taylor said on the official England Football website.

“The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.

“I want to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout the immense sacrifices this career has demanded.”

The Anthony Taylor retirement marks the end of one of England’s most experienced refereeing careers, leaving behind a record of major domestic and international appointments.
