DSS Rescues Remaining Zamfara Polytechnic Students

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have rescued four remaining students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda who were kidnapped in Zamfara State.

Security expert Zagazola Makama announced the development in a statement shared on X, saying DSS officers used intelligence to locate and rescue the students late Wednesday. He said no ransom was paid during the operation.

The rescued students, made up of four males and one female, were among six students taken from an off-campus hostel in the Low-cost area of Kaura Namoda town on 3 June. Armed bandits reportedly invaded the building and abducted the students during the attack.

According to Makama, one of the kidnappers was arrested during the rescue operation, while others involved in the incident did not survive. The operation marks a major development in the Zamfara kidnapping case as security agencies continue efforts to tackle abduction and banditry in the region.

“Following an earlier release of two of the six students, security forces intensified an intelligence-led operation, and surgically secured the safe return of the remaining students to the relief of all,” Makama said.

The successful rescue highlights the role of intelligence-led security operations in responding to kidnapping incidents. Authorities have continued to face pressure to improve protection for students and communities affected by attacks from armed groups.

The rescue of the Federal Polytechnic Kaura Namoda students brings relief to their families and the institution, which had been waiting for the safe return of those still in captivity.
