OPay Reveals Technology Behind Nigeria’s Digital Payments
OPay highlights the hidden technology, security systems and innovation powering reliable digital payments across Nigeria.
Every day, millions of Nigerians rely on digital payments without seeing the technology that keeps their money moving safely and quickly.
Behind every transfer, merchant payment, withdrawal and bill settlement is a complex system working continuously to process transactions, protect customer information, detect fraud and ensure funds reach the right destination. This invisible technology has become a major part of how Nigerians manage money.
The role of this technology was discussed at the OPay Media Parley held on Thursday, 16 July 2026. Media leaders and industry experts met with OPay executives to explore the engineering behind one of Nigeria’s leading financial platforms.
During the event, Elizabeth Wang, Chief Commercial Officer of OPay, explained that the company’s goal goes beyond creating a payment app. She said OPay focuses on using technology to improve financial inclusion and build a trusted platform that delivers social value.
Wang said the company aims to serve one billion users, support ten million merchants and create one million jobs by making digital financial services safer, easier and more accessible.
“People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology, infrastructure and innovation. Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers can move money confidently without ever needing to think about the technology making it possible,” she explained.
The company’s payment infrastructure focuses on reliability, speed and security. Dotun Adekunle, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer of OPay, said the company begins with customer challenges rather than technology itself.
“We don’t begin with technology. We begin with the customer’s experience. Every failed transfer, delayed alert or security concern is treated as an engineering challenge. Where others accept these problems as normal, our teams work until the problem disappears from the customer’s experience,” he said.
OPay uses multiple layers of backup systems, direct connections to payment partners and automatic failover solutions to keep services running. These investments help more than 99.9 per cent of transactions complete successfully, while average processing time remains below one second.
The platform also uses AI-powered security, including tools such as Emergency Lock, Safety PIN and Anti-Scam Shield, to protect customers without affecting normal transactions.
Beyond payments, OPay is investing in education, innovation and youth development through programmes such as the OPayScholars Programme, which supports young Nigerians preparing for the digital economy.
As Nigeria’s digital economy grows, OPay believes the strongest technology is not the one people notice, but the one that quietly creates trust and confidence.
How can technology continue improving access to safe financial services in Nigeria?
