The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) has renewed its commitment to turning Nigerian research discoveries into commercial products through partnerships, investment opportunities and technology development initiatives.

NOTAP Director-General Dr Obiageli Amadiobi announced the plan during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The engagement focused on improving cooperation between both organisations in promoting indigenous innovation, technology transfer and public awareness of intellectual property rights.

Amadiobi revealed that NOTAP will host the National Technology and Innovation Summit in Lagos on 7 and 8 October 2026. The event will bring together researchers, innovators, manufacturers, investors, financial institutions and the Bank of Industry to support the commercialisation of research outcomes.

She explained that the summit will allow researchers to connect with investors and industry leaders, helping promising ideas developed in Nigerian institutions secure funding, enter the marketplace and contribute to economic development.

The NOTAP chief executive said the initiative supports the agency’s mandate to encourage technology transfer, promote local innovation and transform research findings into commercially successful products and services that create jobs and increase national revenue.

She also highlighted the importance of the media in promoting science and technology, saying accurate reporting can help drive Nigeria’s technological progress.

According to Amadiobi, NOTAP works to adapt foreign technologies to Nigeria’s needs by developing local expertise capable of improving and maintaining imported solutions. She added that the agency aims to extend achievements in the ICT sector to manufacturing, engineering and other industries.

The agency is also establishing a technology and innovation hub to demonstrate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, while working with companies such as Huawei, MTN and Airtel to strengthen technical capacity.

NUJ FCT Council Chairman Comrade Grace Ike praised NOTAP’s role in advancing Nigeria’s technology ecosystem through innovation, intellectual property protection and technology acquisition.

“The future of Nigeria depends on strong partnerships between institutions that inform, innovate and inspire. NOTAP stands at the very heart of Nigeria’s technological progress. Your work is not only important but strategic,” she said.

Ike called for stronger cooperation between journalists and innovation institutions, including training programmes on research commercialisation, patents and technology policies.
