Reps Pass State Police Bill

The House of Representatives has passed President Bola Tinubu’s executive bill seeking to establish state police in Nigeria after lawmakers approved the proposal during Thursday’s plenary session.

A reported 311 lawmakers participated in the voting process after the House withdrew its own version of the state police proposal and moved forward with the executive bill submitted by the President.

The approval marks a major step in efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture as the country continues to face challenges including kidnapping, banditry and other forms of insecurity.

The state police bill was considered by lawmakers after the House began reviewing Tinubu’s proposal through its early legislative stages. The move followed the withdrawal of a separate bill earlier considered by the chamber.
