Nigeria Retain U-19 Team Title In Dramatic Comeback

Nigeria produced a thrilling comeback to defeat Egypt and retain the ITTF Africa Youth Championships boys’ U-19 team title, denying their rivals a clean sweep of the team events.

The defending champions recovered from a 2-0 deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory on Wednesday in Accra, with Quadri Atunwon delivering the decisive performance in the final match.

Egypt made the stronger start by winning the opening two matches and appeared on course to claim all four team titles at the championship. However, Sultan Agunbiade revived Nigeria’s hopes by securing victory to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Matthew Kuti, who had narrowly lost 3-2 to Yassin Gaber earlier in the tie, responded impressively with a 3-1 win over Abdelmalk Elsayed to level the contest and force a deciding match.

The ITTF Africa Youth Championships final came down to Atunwon against Gaber in a tense winner-takes-all encounter. Atunwon surged into an 8-2 lead in the deciding fifth game, but Gaber fought back to level the score at 8-8 before earning two championship points at 10-8.

Despite the pressure, Atunwon remained composed. He saved both match points before winning an intense finish 16-14 to seal the ITTF Africa Youth Championships title for Nigeria.

Although Nigeria celebrated success in the boys’ U-19 event, Egypt dominated the remaining team competitions. Nigeria’s boys’ U-15 side, who entered the tournament as defending champions, defeated hosts Ghana 3-2 in the semi-finals before losing 3-0 to Egypt in the final.

Egypt also reclaimed the girls’ U-15 title with a 3-1 victory over Tunisia and successfully defended the girls’ U-19 crown by defeating Algeria 3-0.

While Egypt finished with three of the four available team trophies, Nigeria ensured they would not complete a clean sweep thanks to Atunwon’s memorable match-winning performance.
