Netanyahu, Trump Hold Key White House Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday for high-level talks expected to focus on the Iran war, the situation in Gaza and broader regional security.

The meeting will be the first face-to-face discussion between the two leaders since US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February triggered the conflict. Although reports earlier this year suggested tensions between them, both leaders have recently downplayed any disagreements.

The talks come as Washington says it wants to leave room for diplomacy despite renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, which intensified earlier this month after an April ceasefire collapsed. Israel has not taken part in the latest round of fighting.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the eighth between Trump and Netanyahu since the US president returned to office last year and their first in-person discussions since the conflict began.

Before departing for Washington, Netanyahu described the visit as both an honour and an important responsibility.

“This is a great privilege, but it is also a great responsibility,” he said.

“We will discuss all the issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran. Naturally, our goal is to safeguard our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us,” he added.

After arriving in Washington, Netanyahu attended a private memorial dinner in honour of the late Senator Lindsey Graham and is also expected to attend his memorial service.

Relations between the two leaders came under scrutiny in April during negotiations over an Iran ceasefire, when Trump publicly criticised Netanyahu and later described him as a “very difficult guy.” Netanyahu dismissed the exchanges as “tactical disagreements,” insisting they remained united on the broader objectives of the conflict.

Beyond Iran, the leaders are expected to discuss the implementation of the US-backed framework agreement signed by Israel and Lebanon last month, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where reconstruction efforts remain stalled while Israeli military operations continue.

According to Yonatan Freeman, an international relations expert at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, one of the visit’s main objectives is to counter claims of a growing divide between the two allies.

“I think that the main issue… is to show the world, to show Iran, and also even Lebanon and others… that there is no break or any kind of major disagreement between the United States and Israel,” he said.

“There’s more in agreement between the two leaders than disagreement,” he added.

Freeman said any differences relate mainly to the timing and intensity of military operations rather than overall strategic goals. He also believes Trump will prioritise discussions on Iran and expanding the Abraham Accords, the US-brokered agreements that normalised relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and later Morocco.

Some analysts also expect the meeting to cover the possibility of reducing Israel’s military presence in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza.

The visit comes months before Israel’s national elections, with recent opinion polls showing Netanyahu trailing his rivals. Public dissatisfaction remains over his government’s failure to prevent the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack, which led to the war in Gaza. The White House meeting is therefore expected to carry both diplomatic and political significance for the Israeli leader.
