Liverpool Edge Wrexham In Pre-Season Win
Liverpool secured another pre-season victory as Rio Ngumoha’s late goal earned a narrow win over Wrexham in New York.
Liverpool continued their winning start under new head coach Andoni Iraola with a 1-0 victory over Wrexham in a pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Teenage forward Rio Ngumoha scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute, finishing from close range to delight a crowd of more than 42,000 supporters, many of whom backed Liverpool. The famous stadium, home to the New York Yankees and New York City FC, provided the setting for the closely contested encounter.
The result marked Liverpool’s second consecutive win under Andoni Iraola, following a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday. That match was the Spaniard’s first in charge after replacing the sacked Arne Slot.
Liverpool were without several key players for the match. Defender Joe Gomez remained unavailable after suffering an injury against Sunderland. New signing Jeremy Jacquet also missed the game, while Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak were absent following their international commitments at the World Cup.
Before kick-off, Iraola said Gravenberch, Wirtz and Isak could return for Liverpool’s final fixture of their United States tour against Leeds at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday.
Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have enjoyed steady progress in recent years. The club narrowly missed the Championship play-offs on the final day of last season but arrived in New York with confidence after pre-season victories over Manchester United and Leeds.
