Tinubu Approves Military Salary Increase
Nigerian armed forces personnel will receive salary increases of up to 80 per cent from September under a new Federal Government package.
President Bola Tinubu has approved a military salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with the new pay structure taking effect from September 1, 2026.
The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the package will benefit about 250,000 military personnel. He explained that the military salary increase follows a graduated structure that gives the highest percentage increases to junior personnel.
Under the new arrangement, officers above the rank of colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Personnel from colonel to warrant officer will earn a 50 per cent increase, while those from private to staff sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent.
The new package will raise the annual wage bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an increase of ₦264 billion.
President Tinubu said the military salary increase recognises the sacrifices made by troops in tackling banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.”
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving troop welfare and strengthening the military with modern equipment and advanced technology.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” he said.
The President added that national security remains central to Nigeria’s development, urging personnel to view the military salary increase as a sign of the government’s appreciation for their service.
“Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President said.
