Lionel Messi’s Father Jorge Dies Aged 68

Jorge Messi, father and long-time representative of Lionel Messi, has died aged 68 following a prolonged illness.

Messi’s boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, confirmed Jorge’s death on Saturday and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The club described him as a recognised supporter, businessman and father of the Argentina captain.

Newell’s said Jorge and his wife, Celia Cuccittini, played a central role in Lionel’s career from his earliest days at Malvinas, the club’s youth training complex. The club credited the couple with supporting Lionel “with vision, rigour and affection” as he developed into one of football’s greatest players.

The Argentine club also lowered its flag to half-mast following Jorge’s death as a mark of respect.

“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory,” Newell’s said.

Jorge had received medical treatment in recent months. In June, the Messi family confirmed that he was dealing with a health condition and receiving medical supervision. The family also asked for privacy and urged people not to speculate about his condition.

Jorge remained a major figure throughout Lionel Messi’s career, serving as his representative from his teenage years. He played an important role in negotiations during Messi’s long spell at Barcelona, as well as the events surrounding his departure from the Spanish club in 2021.

Lionel Messi left Rosario for Barcelona at 13 and went on to build a remarkable career. His father remained closely involved as the forward later moved to Paris Saint-Germain and then Inter Miami.

Jorge’s influence extended beyond contract negotiations, as he provided long-standing support throughout his son’s rise to global football stardom.
