Security Forces Battle Bandits Along Zamfara-Kebbi Border

Security forces are engaged in intense fighting with armed bandits around the Zamfara-Kebbi border, as residents seek safer areas.

Troops from the COAS Intervention Battalion 3 under 8 Division, Nigerian Army, the Air Component of Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA and personnel of the Mobile Police Force are taking part in the operation.

Residents said about 240 bandits reportedly emerged from Sangeko Gap in Zamfara State before moving into Makuku town in Kebbi State.

An eyewitness, Fua’ad Bello, said the armed group was operating in three separate formations. The development has raised concerns in nearby communities, with some residents leaving their homes as security forces intensify efforts to contain the attackers.

The operation involves coordinated ground activities by troops and police, with support from the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

A police officer posted to the area, who said only the PPRO was authorised to speak to the press, said the deployment aims to stop the bandits from advancing into surrounding communities and restrict their movement.

“The reported movement of such a large armed group across the Zamfara–Kebbi axis has heightened tension among residents, particularly those living in communities close to the reported area of confrontation.
“Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from security authorities as the operation continues,” he added

The ongoing Zamfara-Kebbi border operation highlights the continued security challenges posed by armed groups across parts of the North-West. Security forces have continued operations to disrupt criminal networks, rescue kidnapping victims and restore normalcy.

As of the time of filing, security agencies had not released an official casualty figure or confirmed the outcome of the engagement.
