Bandit Leader Ado Aleiro Loses Son, Family Members in Katsina Clash

Notorious bandit leader Ado Aleiro has reportedly suffered major losses following a recent encounter in Doma village, Katsina State.

According to intelligence obtained by counter-insurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama, Aleiro lost his son, eight other family members and about 30 motorcycles during the encounter.

An intelligence report dated August 9 stated that none of the estimated 30 motorcycles used by the group reportedly returned. Their riders were also said to have been killed during the confrontation.

The reported loss of the motorcycles could significantly affect the bandit network’s mobility, as such vehicles are commonly used by criminal groups across the North-West to move quickly, transport supplies, communicate and evade security forces.

Following the encounter, intelligence indicated that Aleiro was, as of 3:51pm on Sunday, travelling alone on a motorcycle around the Sakya Dutse, Higi and Asaula areas. Security sources were reportedly monitoring his movements.

Further intelligence indicated that the bandit leader was concerned about the security of a proposed site for his illegal mining activities at Gidan Buhari in Chadiya Ward, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

He reportedly feared that the site could come under attack from Yansakai operating from Tsafe town.

Security sources said the losses could provide security agencies with an opportunity to intensify operations against the weakened group and prevent surviving members from regrouping.

The reported setback comes as military forces continue operations against bandit groups in Zamfara and Katsina and neighbouring states under Operation FANSAN YANMA.
