Iga Swiatek Ends Title Drought With Canadian Open Victory

Iga Swiatek secured her first title of the season with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena Rybakina in the Canadian Open final.

The win gave Iga Swiatek a major confidence boost ahead of the U.S. Open and ended her wait for a title this season.

It was Swiatek’s first final at the U.S. Open warm-up event, and the six-time Grand Slam champion received strong support from the Toronto crowd. Fans repeatedly chanted “Iga! Iga!” during the match, while several Polish flags were also visible in the stands.

Swiatek looked sharp and quick on the hard court, while Kazakhstan’s Rybakina struggled to find her rhythm throughout much of the contest.

The 27-year-old Rybakina was broken twice in the opening set. Swiatek also saved two break points as she took control of the match.

Rybakina made 12 unforced errors in the first set and struggled to make clean contact with the ball. The Australian Open champion also failed to make her serve a major weapon, managing only one ace during the match.

Swiatek broke again early in the second set to move 3-2 ahead. She dropped the following game but responded strongly by winning the final three games to seal the championship.

The Pole produced a clean strike on match point to end her title drought in emphatic fashion.

Fatigue may also have played a part in Rybakina’s performance. She had spent around three more hours on court than Swiatek during the tournament, with each of her previous three matches going to three sets.

The Canadian Open triumph also brings a significant rankings reward. World No. 8 Swiatek will return to the top five following her victory in Toronto.
