The 2027 presidential election will be an easy contest for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Wike made the claim on Tuesday in Abuja during a press briefing, where he defended the Tinubu administration against allegations that it was interfering with democratic and electoral processes.

The minister said the government deserved recognition for allowing political activities and elections to proceed without undue interference.

“When they lose, they claim the government manipulated the process; when they win, they show off their might. It does not work that way.

“From what I have seen, this government allows processes to run their own way, and they must be given credit for that,” he said.

Wike compared the political situation ahead of the 2027 presidential election with the 2023 general election, which he described as a much tougher contest for the incumbent.

“2023 was a tough election for him. Nobody knew what the government at the time was trying to do, and even governors were afraid.

“But 2027 will be different. To remove a government, you need a strong, vibrant opposition that has spent over four years planning, not one that is constantly looking for a party to join,” the minister said.

He described the opposition as “crippled and depleted”, while criticising opposition parties and politicians for what he portrayed as divisions and a lack of effective political organisation.

Wike specifically mentioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He accused them of failing to build the political structure needed to seriously challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The minister also referred to the role of the G5 governors during the 2023 presidential election. He argued that the backing of influential political figures played an important part in the performance of opposition presidential candidates at the time.

However, Wike warned against using governorship election results as a direct indicator of what could happen in a presidential contest.

“Governorship elections rely on local variables, but a national election is a completely different ballgame.

“If it is this 2027 election against Bola Ahmed Tinubu, forget it. It’s over,” he declared.

Beyond politics, the FCT minister addressed the economic difficulties facing Nigerians. He urged citizens to assess political leaders based on the practical steps they take to identify and address national problems rather than relying mainly on emotions.

Wike said effective leadership should focus on finding solutions to challenges affecting the population.

“Leadership is defined by the steps you take to solve problems.

“When someone identifies a problem and takes concrete action to fix it, that is the effort people should appreciate,” Wike said.

The minister maintained that the government’s response to the country’s challenges should provide the basis for assessing its performance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

His comments come as political parties and potential presidential contenders prepare for the next general election, with opposition groups seeking to build a stronger challenge to the APC.

Do you agree with Wike that the opposition currently lacks the strength to seriously challenge Tinubu in 2027?
