The Manchester City charges case continues to cast uncertainty over the club, with the Premier League admitting the verdict has taken longer than expected.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said he understood the growing frustration surrounding the long-running case involving 115 alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules.

Manchester City, which has consistently denied any wrongdoing, was charged in February 2023. The club is still waiting for the outcome of the process.

Masters said the league could not provide details about the case or indicate when a decision might be announced because the process remains confidential.

“Our rules are very clear about that – I have to keep ‌everything confidential until we’re ready to hand down a decision and be clear about it,” Masters told Sky News. “I can’t give any update on timing or what’s happening.

“There’s only one available route through this, which is to allow the process to take its course.

“It ‌has taken longer than expected, and I do understand the frustrations.”

The latest comments mean the Manchester City charges case remains unresolved as the club prepares for a new era under former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca has taken charge following the departure of Pep Guardiola, who left at the end of last season after 10 years as City manager.

During his decade at the club, Guardiola guided City to six Premier League titles, as well as the Champions League, Club World Cup and several other major trophies.

The unresolved Manchester City charges case adds another layer of uncertainty as the club begins the new Premier League campaign.

City will open its league season at home against Bournemouth on Sunday, with the club moving forward under Maresca while the outcome of the financial case remains pending.
