iPhone 17 May Beat the iPhone 18 on Value, Here’s Why

Rising costs, lower trade-in values and possible compromises could make the iPhone 17 a smarter choice than waiting for 2027.

Apple’s expected iPhone 18 launch may not make waiting worthwhile, with higher prices, weaker trade-in values and possible hardware compromises looming.

Apple is expected to introduce part of the iPhone 18 lineup as early as September 2026. However, reports suggest the company could change its usual launch strategy. The iPhone 18 Pro models and a foldable iPhone are expected at the traditional September event, while the standard iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2 and iPhone 18e may not arrive until early 2027.

That timing could create an unusual situation for shoppers. Rather than making the iPhone 17 cheaper after the new Pro models arrive, Apple could potentially raise its price.

A recent TrendForce report suggests the iPhone 18 Pro could cost substantially more than its predecessor. The research firm also indicates that Apple could reconsider the current $799 price of the standard iPhone 17 as it deals with rising memory costs.

Apple has already increased prices on several products this year, including iPads, Macs, Apple TV and HomePods. Although US prices for iPhones and Apple Watches were not included in those increases, there is no guarantee that this will remain the case following the September launch event.

For consumers considering an upgrade, buying an iPhone 17 now could therefore provide more price certainty.

Another concern is Apple trade-in values. The company typically reduces the value assigned to older iPhones when newer models arrive. Apple currently offers up to $720 for an iPhone 16 Pro Max and as much as $335 for an iPhone 15, while an iPhone 8 can receive as little as $40.

Those values could fall after new iPhones arrive, making it potentially less attractive to wait before trading in an existing device.

There are also reports that Apple could compromise on the standard iPhone 18 to control production costs. Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, cited by MacRumors, claims the device could receive a less capable display than the current iPhone 17.

The iPhone 18 is still expected to feature Always-On Display and ProMotion, but its screen could be less bright than the iPhone 17, which offers up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The upcoming A20 chip could also receive a reduced GPU configuration. According to the report, Apple may give the standard iPhone 18 four GPU cores, matching the expected iPhone 18e, rather than retaining the five-core configuration found in the iPhone 17’s A19.

That would mean the iPhone 18 could still introduce improvements while potentially offering weaker graphics performance than the iPhone 17 in some situations.

The current iPhone 17, meanwhile, remains a strong option. It starts with 256GB of storage and uses a display with Always-On Display and ProMotion, including a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Its A19 processor is also among the fastest mobile chips available and supports almost all Apple Intelligence features, including those expected with iOS 27.

Apple has additionally improved the iPhone 17’s selfie camera and main cameras and increased its battery capacity. Taken together, those upgrades make the current model a compelling choice even before the next generation arrives.

If Apple does raise prices while making some compromises to the standard iPhone 18, waiting could offer fewer benefits than expected. For buyers who need a new phone soon, the iPhone 17 may therefore represent the safer value at its current price.
