The AAU ASUU strike began on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after the university’s academic staff union declared an indefinite industrial action.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter, announced the strike over what it described as the alleged failure of the Edo State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement.

The union disclosed the decision in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele, and Secretary, Dr William Odion. The statement was made available to journalists in Benin City.

Dated Monday, August 24, 2026, the statement said the AAU ASUU strike would take effect from Tuesday, August 25.

The union said its decision followed a congress meeting held on Monday. Members reached the resolution after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum previously given to the Edo State Government and the management of the university.

According to the union, the ultimatum was intended to give the state government and university management time to address the issues surrounding the implementation of the agreement. With the deadline having passed, the union said it had decided to begin an indefinite strike.

The action places fresh pressure on the Edo State Government and the management of Ambrose Alli University to address the concerns raised by the academic staff.

The AAU ASUU strike also means that academic activities at the institution could be affected for an unspecified period, as the union has not given a date for ending the industrial action.

ASUU’s Ekpoma chapter said its decision came through its congress, making the strike a collective position of the union at the university.

The dispute centres on the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement by the Edo State Government. The union’s statement did not indicate that the matter had been resolved before the strike began.

The latest development adds to the continuing concerns over agreements between university staff unions and government authorities, particularly where implementation remains disputed.

The AAU ASUU strike will now depend on further discussions between the union, the state government and the university management, as all sides face pressure to resolve the disagreement and restore normal academic activities.

Do you think dialogue between ASUU, the Edo State Government and AAU management can resolve the dispute quickly?
