The death toll in Nepal from devastating flash floods in the border region with China has risen to at least 469, police confirmed on Friday. Nepalese authorities said 1,545 people had been rescued so far, many of them suffering injuries from the disaster. With three additional deaths reported by China, the overall Nepal flood death toll now stands at 472, while more than 1,400 people remain missing.

Police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle told dpa that officials still lack a clear picture of the total number of missing persons. He said it could take several more days before the full scale of the disaster becomes known.

Authorities also revealed that dozens of bodies have yet to be identified. Police explained that the sheer force of the floodwaters, combined with mud and debris, left many victims badly disfigured or, in some cases, tore bodies apart entirely, making identification a slow and difficult process.

As rescue and recovery operations continue, officials warn that the Nepal flood death toll could rise further in the coming days as more missing persons are accounted for and additional bodies are recovered from the affected border region.
