Hunter Biden’s $LAPTOP memecoin crashed shortly after launching on Wednesday, losing most of its value after briefly surging to $222 within minutes of release. Forbes reported that the Hunter Biden memecoin reached $222 at approximately 8:05 a.m. EDT before falling sharply, dropping to just $1.79 by 12:20 p.m., a plunge that began roughly 30 minutes after launch.

The token was launched by Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, after he promoted it as a project tied to his public image and the controversy surrounding his widely publicised laptop story. Ahead of the launch, Biden warned prospective buyers not to expect him or anyone else to artificially boost the token’s value, describing $LAPTOP as representing more than just an asset, framing it instead as a symbol of resilience and recovery.

According to Forbes, roughly 30 per cent of the token supply is held by Biden and other founders, with part of that allocation potentially subject to permanent destruction if certain conditions are met. Biden explained that tokens would be burned if specified events occurred, and otherwise sent to charity, with one reported condition tied to a Democrat winning the 2028 US presidential election.

This Hunter Biden memecoin launch follows his growing public support for cryptocurrency, alongside his criticism of digital currencies associated with President Donald Trump and other political figures. The project reflects a broader trend of politicians and celebrities launching memecoins that initially attract significant interest before experiencing steep price declines.

Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ $NYC token, launched in January, followed a similar pattern, rising sharply before falling roughly 75 per cent. An account connected to that project also withdrew cryptocurrency worth approximately $2.5 million, prompting accusations of a rug pull, though Adams denied any wrongdoing, and around $1.5 million was later returned.

Former First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump have also launched their own memecoins. Forbes reported that Trump’s $TRUMP token had lost about 75 per cent of its value over the year, while Melania Trump’s $MELANIA token had similarly fallen substantially from its launch price.

The $LAPTOP token takes its name from the political controversy surrounding Hunter Biden’s alleged laptop, which became a major subject of political debate during his father’s presidency. Biden has positioned the new cryptocurrency as a direct response to the Trump family’s involvement in the memecoin market.

With its sharp decline, the Hunter Biden memecoin now faces the same volatility that has plagued several celebrity- and politician-backed cryptocurrencies, leaving its future value largely dependent on ongoing market activity and investor interest.
