Elena Rybakina Claims World No. 1 Ranking
Elena Rybakina became Kazakhstan’s first world No. 1 after reaching the US Open semifinals despite an injury setback.
Elena Rybakina secured the world No. 1 ranking on Wednesday after reaching the US Open semifinals, marking a historic achievement for Kazakhstan.
The second seed had faced doubts about her tournament prospects after retiring with an injury at the Cincinnati tune-up event last month. She had just over a week to recover and prepare for the final Grand Slam of the year.
Those concerns have now disappeared. Rybakina produced a strong display under the intense summer heat at Flushing Meadows, defeating Zheng Qinwen to book her place in the final four and guarantee the top ranking.
“I think from where I was coming to this tournament, being injured and not practicing, I think we came pretty far,” said Rybakina, who will next face Coco Gauff, the 2023 champion, for a place in the final.
Rybakina will officially take the top position when the rankings are updated on Monday, regardless of what happens in her remaining matches. Her achievement makes her the 30th woman to become world No. 1, replacing Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka.
The milestone is particularly significant for Kazakhstan, which has seen its profile in international tennis rise alongside Rybakina’s success.
“I’m very proud representing Kazakhstan,” she said. “Every time I come back to Kazakhstan, no matter which city I go, it’s always so many kids. Now they play tennis, and more and more are coming to the tennis facilities.”
Born in Russia, Rybakina changed her sporting allegiance to Kazakhstan in 2018, with greater financial support among the reasons for the move. Since then, she has played a leading role in raising the country’s profile in the sport.
She became Kazakhstan’s first Grand Slam singles champion when she won Wimbledon in 2022. She added another major title at the Australian Open this year, further establishing herself among the leading players in women’s tennis.
Her latest achievement now gives Kazakhstan its first representative at the summit of the women’s world rankings. The world No. 1 ranking also adds another landmark to Rybakina’s rapid rise on the international stage.
Kazakhstan Tennis Federation President Bulat Utemuratov described the achievement as a “historic day”.
“She continues to perfectly exemplify the successful development of tennis in our country, and her ascent to the very top of world tennis will deeply inspire the younger generation of Kazakhstani players,” he said in a statement.
Rybakina’s rise has already helped encourage greater interest in tennis across Kazakhstan, and her latest milestone could further inspire young players looking to follow her path.
Can Rybakina cap her historic US Open run by winning another Grand Slam title?
