The NNPC self-service fuel pumps are being introduced at selected NNPC Retail stations, allowing motorists to purchase and dispense petrol without assistance from an attendant.

The move forms part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s plan to introduce between 50 and 70 smart, self-service stations across Nigeria within the next six months.

Under the new system, motorists can choose how much fuel they want, pay through a mobile application and use a digital code to activate the pump. This differs from the traditional model, where an attendant handles the dispensing process.

NNPC Retail shared a guide on its X account on Friday explaining how customers can use the new service at participating stations.

Motorists can follow these steps to use the NNPC self-service fuel pumps:

  1. Download the NRL Fuel App: Motorists should first download the NRL Fuel App using the download link provided through NNPC Retail’s X account.
  2. Select the fuel: Open the application, choose Fuel Purchase and select the type of fuel required.
  3. Choose a station: Browse the available station list and select an NNPC Retail location offering self-service. Customers should look for the green Self-Serve badge beside the station name.
  4. Enter the amount: After selecting a station, enter the amount to be spent on fuel. Check the displayed quantity and price, then select Pay from Wallet to complete the transaction.
  5. Collect the digital receipt: Once payment goes through, the app generates a digital receipt containing the Order ID, Self-Service Code and QR Code.
  6. Activate the pump: At the pump, enter the eight-digit self-service code on the terminal and press the hash key. Once the code is confirmed, pick up the nozzle and dispense the fuel. The system will allow the customer to receive the exact amount purchased.

The self-service option is currently available only at selected NNPC Retail stations as the company continues its rollout.

NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the initiative forms part of a wider plan to transform traditional filling stations into broader energy and mobility hubs.

At the newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said customers could complete the payment process using their phones before dispensing the exact quantity of fuel purchased.

The planned smart stations will offer more than conventional petrol sales. According to NNPC, the locations will combine fuel services with facilities such as electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and other mobility-related services.

The rollout marks a shift towards greater automation at NNPC Retail stations. By allowing customers to complete payments digitally and operate the pump themselves, the new system is designed to give motorists more direct control over fuel purchases.

As NNPC expands the network, more motorists are expected to gain access to the NNPC self-service fuel pumps and the wider range of services planned for the company’s smart stations.
