Novak Djokovic exits ATP Top 10 after the latest rankings confirmed his fall to 12th following his surprise first-round defeat at the US Open.

The 39-year-old Serbian, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, suffered a dramatic 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 loss to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a match lasting four hours and 36 minutes. It was Djokovic’s first opening-round defeat at a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open.

The result ended his long-standing presence among the sport’s leading players. Djokovic had remained inside the ATP Top 10 since 2018, when he returned to the group after winning his fourth Wimbledon title.

His latest ranking fall also came after he failed to defend the points he earned at last year’s US Open. Djokovic, a four-time US Open champion, reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in 2025 before losing to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who went on to win the title.

Djokovic first entered the ATP Top 10 in 2007. His first lengthy absence came in November 2017, after an elbow problem forced him to retire during his Wimbledon quarter-final against Tomas Berdych. The injury kept him out for the rest of the season.

He eventually returned to the Top 10 in 2018 after lifting the Wimbledon trophy. Now, the latest rankings mark another significant change in his remarkable career.

Djokovic still holds the ATP record for the most weeks spent as World No. 1, with an extraordinary 428 weeks at the summit.

The latest ATP Top 10 is:

Rank Player Country Points
1 Jannik Sinner Italy 11,500
2 Alexander Zverev Germany 9,690
3 Carlos Alcaraz Spain 5,560
4 (+5) Ben Shelton USA 4,680
5 (-1) Felix Auger-Aliassime Canada 3,890
6 (+2) Daniil Medvedev Russia 3,770
7 (-1) Flavio Cobolli Italy 3,720
8 (+4) Frances Tiafoe USA 3,380
9 (-2) Alex de Minaur Australia 3,300
10 Taylor Fritz USA 3,175

Djokovic’s departure creates another historic moment in men’s tennis. For the first time since October 2002, none of the three players known as the Big Three — Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal — feature in the ATP Top 10.

Federer, a 20-time Major winner, retired in 2022, while Nadal, who won 22 Grand Slam titles, ended his professional career in 2024.

At the top of the rankings, Alexander Zverev remained second after winning his maiden US Open title. The German, however, reduced the gap to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who missed the New York tournament because of a knee injury.

American Ben Shelton made the biggest move among the leading players. After reaching the US Open final, where he lost to Zverev, Shelton climbed five places to a career-high fourth.

His compatriot Frances Tiafoe also reached a new career-best position. After losing to Shelton in the semi-finals, Tiafoe moved from 12th to eighth.

Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev climbed from eighth to sixth after reaching the round of 16. Felix Auger-Aliassime, Flavio Cobolli and Alex de Minaur all dropped places.

Several players outside the Top 10 also reached new career-high positions. American Brandon Nakashima moved to 16th, while Michael Zheng reached 88th. Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo climbed to 58th, while Frenchmen Arthur Gea and Titouan Droguet reached 63rd and 89th respectively.

Portugal’s Jaime Faria rose to 69th, while Britain’s Jan Choinski reached 74th and Toby Samuel climbed to 94th.

For Djokovic, the fall to 12th marks another notable chapter in a career that has produced records, titles and an unprecedented 428 weeks at the top. Whether he can return to the ATP Top 10 will now become one of the key questions of the remainder of the season.
