Dangote Refinery IPO marks a historic moment for African finance as the continent’s biggest-ever initial public share sale officially begins today. The offering aims to raise $1.6 billion across Africa, with an ambitious target of attracting ten million shareholders to participate in this landmark investment opportunity.

The IPO runs from 14 September through 13 October, with the official listing planned for November on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). This Dangote Refinery IPO represents more than just a fundraising exercise—it’s a transformative moment that could reshape Africa’s capital markets landscape.

Proceeds from this historic offer will be committed to scaling up the nameplate capacity of the crude oil processing plant from its current 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million by 2030. The IPO values the refinery at $49 billion, with analysts expecting the potential listing to expand the NGX’s market capitalisation—which stood at N157.6 trillion at market open on Monday—by approximately one third.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, declared the market and the Facts Behind the Figure ceremony open around 09:35 West African Time in Lagos, with numerous dignitaries in attendance. NGX chairman Umaru Kwairanga confirmed strong early interest, stating: “From eight o’clock today, we are talking of over 10 billion and above that have already joined.”

The prestigious event drew an impressive roster of attendees, including:

  • David Bird, CEO of the refinery
  • Edwin Devakumar, Vice President, Oil & Gas and Fertiliser, Dangote Group
  • Frank Nwiti, CEO of Nairobi Stock Exchange
  • Neo Mooki, Chairperson of Botswana Stock Exchange
  • Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife
