2027: Obi Promises Nigerians ‘Tangible Impact’ Within One Year If Elected
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has raised the stakes ahead of the 2027 election, promising Nigerians that the impact of his leadership would become visible within his first year in office if elected president.
Obi made the pledge in his Independence Day address on Thursday, declaring that his proposed administration would make governance measurable, accountable and focused on citizens’ welfare and productivity.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria could no longer afford leadership that offers promises without measurable results.
“My message today is not one of despair. It is a message of hope, determination and responsibility. I dare to proclaim with full assurance that a new Nigeria is possible,” Obi said.
“As President of Nigeria, I will make governance measurable, accountable and centred on the welfare and productivity of our people. Within the first year, Nigerians will begin to see the tangible impact of purposeful and effective leadership.”
The declaration puts Obi’s 2027 campaign on a potentially contentious footing, as Nigerians would be faced with his promise of visible results within 12 months against the scale of the country’s security, economic and social challenges.
Security tops agenda
Obi said his administration would confront insecurity decisively, promising to create conditions that would allow farmers to return to their farms, children to resume schooling and businesses to operate without fear.
“No Nigerian should be forced to live in an IDP camp because his or her government has failed to provide security,” he said.
He also promised to facilitate the safe and dignified return of Nigerians displaced by insecurity to their communities.
Obi’s position followed his recent visit to Sokoto State with his political ally and running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, where they visited the internally displaced persons camp at Ramin Kura.
He said the condition of thousands of displaced women and children underscored the consequences of insecurity and governance failures.
“These are Nigerians who should be living in their communities, going to school, farming their land, conducting their businesses and contributing to the economy. Instead, they live as displaced persons in their own country,” he said.
The NDC candidate blamed successive political leadership for failing to adequately address the country’s challenges.
“The political leaders have failed our country and, most importantly, we have failed our children. This must change,” he declared.
Obi targets consumption economy
On the economy, Obi said Nigeria must move away from what he described as a consumption-driven model towards production, job creation, agriculture, manufacturing and human-capital development.
He listed education, healthcare, security and productive enterprise as foundations of a functioning country rather than luxuries.
In another pledge likely to attract political attention, Obi said he would lead by example by spending his presidential holidays within Nigeria rather than travelling abroad.
He named Zamfara, Borno, Kwara, Ebonyi and Ekiti among states he intended to visit.
“I want to continue to see Nigeria. I want to know Nigeria. I want to spend time with Nigerians, listen to them, understand their challenges and celebrate their resilience,” he said.
Obi said his administration would pursue a secure, united and productive Nigeria anchored on competence, accountability and justice.
He also challenged citizens to demand accountability from political office holders, insisting that rebuilding the country would require more than prayers and campaign promises.
“The Nigeria we desire will not be built by prayers alone, nor by promises alone,” he said.
“It will be built by leadership that understands that public office is a sacred trust, by citizens who demand accountability, and by all of us who refuse to accept failure as our destiny.”
With the 2027 presidential contest already taking shape, Obi’s one-year delivery pledge is set to become a significant benchmark against which his campaign proposals and, if successful, his administration could be measured.
