Ahead of the January 31 deadline set for the enrollment for the Bank Verification Number BVN in the diaspora, 1,900 Nigerians outside the country have been registered in compliance with the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN directive on the biometric for depositors in the sector.
Online Integrated Solutions Services, a consultancy firm to the Nigeria Immigration Service, said on Tuesday that those registered are NIgerians in the Southern Africa region.
Jamil Shittu, the Centre Manager of the firm in South Africa said majority of the registered Nigerians were resident in South Africa while about 300 live in the Southern Africa region.
Shittu said the firm was targeting more than 2,500 Nigerians for registration before the Jan. 31 deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He said students and lecturers in some South African universities were given priority because of funds transfer and school fees needs.
“ We expect more Nigerians to be captured before the Jan. 31 deadline set by the CBN.
“Already, Nigerians resident in the region have been calling to book appointments and we are also making efforts to ensure that they are captured,“ he said.
Shittu commended the Nigeria Union for mobilising Nigerians for the registration exercise.
“ The Nigeria Union has helped us to get venues for the exercise and made contacts to mobilise Nigerians.
“ We are grateful to the union and we encourage all Nigerians in Southern Africa region to come and be registered before the January 31 deadline.
“ It is important that they are registered,“ he said.
Shittu, who said some Nigerians in the region were not aware of the BVN exercise, noted that the Nigerian missions had been helpful in contacting them.
