Subscribers of Globacom are to experience interconnection challenges following the decision of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to demolish 7,012 of its masts through which telecom services are accessed across the country.
The decision of the NCAA will also affect the services of eight banks whose total1693 masts across the nation have been marked for demolition in an exercise which the Aviation agency said they had earlier been warned of the consequences of their actions.
The eight banks are United Bank of Africa 439 masts, Guaranty Trust Bank 295 masts, Unity Bank 217 masts and Sterling Bank 159 masts. Others are Union Bank 92 masts, First City Monument Bank 205 masts, Fidelity Bank 83 masts and Access Bank 303 masts.
NCAA is demolishing the masts following the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum given to the affected companies to secure Aviation Height Clearance (AHC) approval for every tower installation in the country.
The Aviation authority said on Sunday that some of companies have secured the approval while others that have failed to secure the approval will have their tower installations demolished.
Negotiation with Globacom Nigeria Limited which has 7,012 masts affected was said to have broken down and the subscribers in areas where the mast serve should brace up for interconnectivity challenges.
Spokesman of the NCAA, Sam Adurogboye said the regulatory authority is left with no choice as the 30 – day ultimatum given to those telecommunication service providers has expired.
Prior to the expiration of the ultimatum, he said letters of reminder were written to all affected organisations to obtain Aviation Height Clearance (AHC) for their masts and which most of the telecommunication companies complied during the period of the ultimatum.
The Regulatory Authority requires an Aviation Height Clearance (AHC) approval for every tower installation in the country irrespective of the height and location.
It said while some of the providers and operators have since commenced regularisation of their masts, others have failed to do same.
Some eight banks with total 1,693 tower installations have also not regularised their masts according to the Aviation authority.
to include Globacom Nigeria 7,012 masts, Therefore, a total of 8,805 masts belonging to the aforementioned organisations will be decommissioned forthwith, NCAA said.
