Group Decries Nigeria’s Challenges Despite Oil Wealth
The high rate of poverty, unemployment, infrastructure decay, among other challenges currently facing the county, has become a source of worry to a Non- Governmental Organisation,(NGO), which is urging the Federal Government to address the issues from worsening.
According to the group, Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy, CODWA), despite being a major oil-producing country, Nigeria has failed to meet the socio-economic needs of its over 200 million people.
Rather, the group said in a statement through its convener, Comrade Taiwo Otitolaye, that high rate of unemployment, infant mortality, decayed infrastructure had been the bane of the country over the years.
According to Otitolaye, who spoke in Ikeja, Lagos on Wednesday, at an interactive session on the”Dissemination of Research Report with Social Movement on Oil and Gas Sector Revenue Management and Quality of Life in Nigeria,” alongside other notable speakers like the Acting Dean, Students’ Affairs, Lagos State University, Ojo, Dr. Oluwafemi Obayori, government should be challenged to be more accountable to the people.
He decries, as unacceptable, the running of the nation by the current political leaders, who are rather concerned about their individual personal interests, greed at the expense of the mass majority of the people.
According to him, “It is regrettable that Nigeria has been described as the poverty capital of the world; and despite its accrual huge oil revenue, most of which is corruptly appropriated by the managers of the country, there continued to be diminished value, security challenges like armed robbery, kidnapping, insurgency among several others.”
He called for a more concerted approach to avert Nigeria from slipping into total collapse, even with its dire consequences for the nation.
