An Agbara Magistrate Court has sentenced two Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) customers, Adetayo Adefila and Faith Ogunmade, residents of Medina area of Agbara in Lagos State to three months jail term for assaulting an Eko Field Representative (EFR) in February.
In an official statement by the Disco on its twitter handle, the defendants were reported and arrested in March for ganging up to assault and throwing Mrs. Ann Ezuma, the EFR into a pile of trailer tyres.
The defendants, who were charged to court on a three-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony, assault and conduct likely to breach peace and were found guilty of all the charges and sentenced to three months imprisonment on each count to run concurrently.
In addition , they were charged a tune of N5,000 to the victim of the assault on each count and remanded them to correctional centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun state.
The defenders were said to have illegally reconnected their place of residence after being disconnected earlier on the grounds of failure to pay their electricity bills.
Meanwhile, reactions of some customers were that they also need to discontinue the criminally assault of customers with crazy bill and then stop threaten customers with legal action “when we defend our right which is protected by law. Welcome to Nigeria. Smh!”
Other comments were:
“Then stop giving people ridiculously high estimated bills and expect them not 2 defend that criminal act. There is an order by d @NERCNG on d capping of estimated bills which took effect since Feb 20th 2020. You choose to disregard the order and continue to criminally bill people.”
“Kindly go the extra mile of providing your customers with the prepaid option; rather then give vale threats, if your staff are assaulted. Wouldn’t it be much more convenient and a business norm, if you make provisions for prepaid meter, for free, without recourse to a Charade.”
However, EKEDC stated that “we reiterate our commitment to go the full extent of the law to prosecute anyone who assaults our staff or field representatives. We urge members of the public to maximize the use of our established channels for complaint resolution and other enquiries.”
