The Federal Government has saved about N15 billion in a year from over bloated travel costs and allowances of government workers.
The Head of the Efficiency Unit, Patience Oniha, disclosed this at the sidelines of the Cost Management on Overhead Expenditure for Permanent Secretaries, Chief Executive Officers of Departments and Agencies.
She noted that the amount was saved through activities of the Efficiency Unit under the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Oniha said, “The Efficiency Unit has saved some N15 billion especially from travels and allowances. We hope to save additional N15 billion going forward.”
The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, at the programmen also said the Federal Government would soon issue a new template on approved expenses for government-owned enterprises as efforts are being intensified to control the nation’s recurrent expenditure.
She stated that there is need to control recurrent expenditure, especially overheads, a drive which necessitated the creation of the Efficiency Unit by the Presidency in 2015.
The Minister said that the Federal Government was determined to plug all loopholes which encourages revenue losses.
She added that the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation was working on a new template to determine what are allowed or disallowed expenses for state-owned enterprises.
This, according to her, is aimed at making state-owned enterprises productive and accountable.
