Governors of the 19 Northern States have opposed the disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau, Simon Lalong, on Thursday said the disbanded SARS was useful in the Northern region in combating insecurity and crimes.

He spoke to State House correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Nigeria Police had on Tuesday accepted the five-point demand of the EndSARS protesters, including Police reforms and disbandment of the SARS.

The Police on Wednesday established a new unit known as Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT).

Lalong stated that what was needed is the reformation of the unit to enable it perform optimally.

“SARS is not made up of bad elements alone as it also includes personnel who are doing their work diligently,” he said.
