CACOVID Plans $100m To Procure Vaccines For Nigerians
The Coalition Against COVID-19, CACOVID has agreed to raise $100 million to procure vaccines for Nigerians, with one million doses of the Vaccines ready for shipment to Nigeria in the next two weeks.
Rising on Monday from its weekly meeting, the leadership of CACOVID led by Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote and Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe alongside Afreximbank President, Benedict Oramah agreed to contribute $100 million for the first batch of vaccines for Nigerians.
According to the Afreximbank President Oramah, who briefed the CACOVID leaders, he said the bank has set up a $2 billion facility with the African Union Vaccine taskforce to purchase vaccines for the African Continent.
He noted that the allocation for Nigeria has been capped at 42 million doses, stressing that one million doses were ready for shipment to Nigeria in the next two weeks if a down payment was made by February 8th.
At the meeting, the CACOVID leadership agreed that besides these 1 million doses from Afreximbank worth $3.45 million, being the very first tranche. CACOVID will also purchase vaccines through other credible and subsidized mechanisms such as COVAX.
The group stated that the vaccines will be delivered to Nigeria and distributed through the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA).
CACOVID added that the Nigerian public should be aware that vaccine purchase is only possible through the Federal Government of Nigeria, and that no individual or company can purchase vaccines directly from any legitimate and recognized manufacturer.
The Coalition Against COVID-19 is a private sector-led organization in Nigeria created to assist the government in combating the Coronavirus disease in the country. It was launched on March 26, 2020, following an announcement made by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
