The Christian Association of Nigeria has declared a three-day national mourning and prayers for the continuing killings and other challenges facing the country.

During the period from May 28 to May 30, all local churches are expected to meet each evening for prayers in an attitude of mourning or sobriety.

CAN National Secretary General Daramola Joseph conveys the message to church leaders in a letter dated May 11, 2021 titled “National Days of Sobriety / Mourning and Fervent Prayers for God’s Mercy on the Part of the Christians in Nigeria from Friday May 28 – Sunday May 30, 2021 “.

The letter was addressed to the national leaders of the CAN, block leaders, zone president, state presidents and their secretaries.

It said: “This is to inform you that the president of the CAN, in view of the continuing assassinations, banditry and other problems in Nigeria, has deemed it imperative and absolutely necessary that our country need prayers for God’s mercy and intervention in our land. .

Accordingly, all the local churches are expected to meet in the evening of each reserved day to pray to God in an attitude of mourning or sobriety over the bloodshed of many innocent Nigerians, especially Christians.

In light of these, the following are suggested prayer points to follow during such prayer meetings:

“That we are saddened and hurt by the blood of many innocent Nigerians that evil people among us have shed or by those abducted and abused in various ways. May God forgive our sins wherever we as a church or Nigerians, especially our leaders, have sinned against God.

“That the plans of the wicked people in our midst to paralyze human, social and economic activities in this nation and throw the nation into chaos would be thwarted by the Lord Jesus Christ.

“That any religious insanity or warfare that does not allow us to worship God in the way that we are convinced to worship him would be nullified by the Lord.

“Pray for the church to prevail over all threats to its existence in Nigeria. That the gate of hell will never prevail against the church in the name of Jesus.

“May our leaders do justice in leadership and be fair to all ethnic and religious groups in all their actions to quell the ethnic and religious tensions that we currently have.

“Let law enforcement officials take up their responsibilities and provide the necessary security we need in Nigeria.”

He added: “That every step that terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, gunmen and other evil people take among us from now on would fail. Those invisible hands and the Lord’s army would fight them and Nigeria would be at peace.

“Pray and plant justice, mercy, prosperity, peace and love in our nation. Pray for the speedy recovery of our nation from all our losses so that this nation may very soon become a nation that everyone in the world would love to be.

“Pray to break the yoke of the generational curse that the victims may have imposed on Nigeria and its leadership during the slave trade.”
