Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, (PTAD), has said that the Federal Government has been paying more than N90billion to pensioners in the country yearly.
The directorate said that it inherited 92,373 pensioners from the unfunded liabilities of redundant agencies and parastatals according to the Executive Secretary of PTAD, Chioma Ejikeme at the launching in Enugu of I Am Alive App aimed at easing the stress of verification exercises for pensioners.
She said: “Pensioners have never found it easy in Nigeria like during this administration because Federal Government under President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration pays over ver 90 billion as pension every year.”
However, findings revealed that the Federal Government was owing over N90.1 billion pension inherited unfunded liabilities to redundant agencies and parastatals.
The pension directorate’s Deputy Director of Parastatals, Pension Department, PaPD, of PTAD, Yusuf Umar said in Abuja that the outstanding revealed that the defunct Nigeria Telecommunications Nitel/Mtel had the largest with N73 billion unfunded liability, translating to 81 per cent. Umar said others were Delta Steel – N7. 9 billion, NICON Insurance – N4. 9 billion and New Nigeria Newspaper – N2. 9 billion.
He added that there were 92,373 pensioners drawn from 265 agencies under the PaPD.
According to him, the amount remained a concern for the directorate, saying that several engagements were ongoing to sort the funds and offset the liability.
