A frontline Yoruba king and Alaafin of Oyo in Oyo state, Lamidi Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House has passed on at the age of 83.

Alaafin who was the longest reigning in Oyo history having ruled for 52 years, died in the late hours of Friday after a brief illness at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.

His remains were brought to Oyo in the early hours of Saturday and traditional rites for his passage have began, according to a palace source.

Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, is expected to lead the ancient town of Oyo before a new Alaafin is installed will formally brief the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde is expected to make an official announcement later today.

There were arrangements to fly the Alasfin abroad for medical treatment before he passed on late Friday night.
His death followed two other senior Oyo State monarchs – the Olubadan of Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Jimoh Oyewumi – who died. All happened in less than five months.
