The National Union of Banks, Insurance ,and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) and the Electricity workers, under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), have joined the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its solidarity protest as promised over the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.
The solidarity protest commenced today, Tuesday and is being held nationwide, featuring at least 35 unions and associations affiliated with the NLC.
The Lagos section of the protest which is being led by the state’s chapter of the NLC began in Ikeja and climaxed at the Lagos state government secretariat in Alausa.
NLC had last week directed workers to embark on a nationwide protest on July 26 and 27 in solidarity with the strike by ASUU. – which had been on since February 14, 2022.
In solidarity, the electricity workers union in a letter with reference, NUEE/NS/2022/008, titled, “Nigeria Labour Congress/ASUU Solidarity Protest, Joe Ajaero, general secretary, NUE, directed all its members to participate in the protest over the prolonged closure of tertiary institutions.
According to the letter dated July 22nd, said, “In line with the NLC’s directive and our position, which was made known at the Central Working Committee and National Executive Council meeting of Congress.
“All members of the union are enjoined to massively mobilize and actively participate in the NLC/ASUU solidarity protest against the continued closure of the nation’s tertiary institutions, scheduled for July 26/27, 2022,” the union had stated.
In the same vein, The National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) which is an umbrella body of workers in the financial sector also called on its members to join the protest.
Although banks have not shut their services to customers, the leadership of NUBIFIE joined the protest in Lagos Tuesday.
President Muhammadu Buhari had last week directed the minister of education, Adamu Adamu to liaise with ASUU on modalities for ending the strike.
NLC President, Ayuba Wabba stated this morning that the protest will hold today across the 36 States while the major will hold Wednesday in Abuja.
“The protest on Tuesday is just to bring up the issue to the attention of the government that we cannot continue to allow to keep our children at home. They must go back to school”, Wabba said.
Tuesday, and Wednesday, protests are just the preamble and we hope the government will act to prevent us from moving to the next level, the NLC President warned.
